Buttoning down

Well, the first quarter of 2011 has been packed full of make and do, primarily because people are spawning like crazy frogs. I am literally surrounded (admittedly, not right now) with pregnant ladies, and new babies mean compulsory crafting. The most significant of these imminent arrivals (to me) is Button*, the soon-to-be baby girl belonging […]

Three Blues

Spike is not a hat fan. He’s not a scarf fan, either. Also, gloves don’t really rate with him. In fact, if it’s woolly and warm, he doesn’t dig it. Deep inside, I know this is because he is clever. He is taking early, but necessary steps to avoid embarrassing photos returning to haunt him […]

Oh dear. No eggs here…

…goes the refrain in one of Spike’s favourite books, and one of my least favourite. It has become an expression of shock / dismay / disappointment / sympathy in the Spitting Yarn household. I employ it today with reference to a rather typically Spitting Yarnish occurrence. In April of last year I was knitting a […]

One of those mothers

Poor, poor Spike. I can see it now. “Mummy! Ppplllllleeeease, please can you buy me this Buzz Lightyear costume to wear to Trixiebell’s party?”. “Don’t worry, my darling boy, Mummy will…MAKE YOU ONE!”. And poor old Spike will end up at Trixiebell’s party looking like a cross between Marvin the Paranoid Android and a cardboard […]

Seasonal adjustments

Aptly, for the time of year and subject matter of this post, there is snow on the ground as I type. While much of the UK has had a healthly covering already this year, London has “escaped” the brunt of the white weather – much to my immense disappointment. The mere dusting which adorns the […]

Plastic fantastic

It’s been quite a while since I have tackled a lace knitting project. Even the simplest of lace requires more concentration than I ordinarily have at my disposal. Still, I hankered after a lacey, slouchy beret-style hat and it would be shameful for a knitter to buy such a thing, so I cast on for […]

paint + brush

We’re having a lot of fun with pens and pencils, paints and play dough at the moment. While the toddling stage brings it’s own challenges, the way we spend our days has got more interesting. Spike has shown a real zeal for creative pursuits, as I’m sure all young children do. Mr Spitting Yarn observed, […]

Making his mark

At least once a day Spike settles down for a good scribble session using crayons and enormous sheets of paper on the floor. We let him wield felt tips less often, as they require a modicum more supervision. For a session with felt tips, we tend to sit Spike in his high chair to contain […]

Feet up and knitting

I appear to have finished a knitting project. “How?” You may ask. The answer is by studiously and strenuously committing myself to a schedule of avoidance. All useful and required chores were set to one side. Quite enjoyable, really. This is Henry’s Sweater, a Petite Purls pattern.

A cry for help

Can anyone suggest an aranish-weight yarn (or heavier) which is super-soft, solid or semi-solid and not fluffy or sheeny. Any type of wool or wool-heavy mix is unlikely to do, unless it’s as soft as this (which, incidentally, is what I am trying to substitute). Mr Spitting Yarn is *very* particular. A proper post to […]
