The project I was knitting with the lovely merino my Secret Pal sent me was a One Skein Wonder. Here it is finished.

It was a fun project to knit. But, gosh, it took more than one skein. One 165 yard skein and near enough one and a half extra balls. I knew I didn’t have enough of the merino to finish the thing, so I bought a ball of Debbie Bliss’ Cashmerino chunky, which was a good gauge match. I didn’t expect to have to buy another ball to finish off, though.

I didn’t choose this project because I thought it would look good on me. I have a broad back, chubby upper arms and I’m not lacking in the bosom area. And as predicted, it don’t look great on! But it’s snug and warm. I expect I’ll cosy up in the house with it.

I also finally got to grips with two-tone brioche stitch, thanks to a ‘how to’ in Spring 2005 Interweave Knits. I’m knitting my DB a winter scarf using it.

On the reverse, the light blue areas are dark blue, and vice versa. It’s cool. I must confess, the couple of inches you can see in the pic above are no more. I lost my groove, and the stitch pattern is quite hard to correct if things go wrong. So I’ve ripped it and will start again. I am knitting with Jo Sharp’s Silkroad Aran, which is a lovely yarn (delivered overnight by Get Knitted).

I’ve also started on a Christmas present for a friend. It’s a short, cross-over scarf which will fasten with a big button.

It’s the my so called scarf pattern made my own, with a little bit of help from Spunky Eclectic yarn.

  • Those colours are gorgeous – I hope it’s a good friend you’re making it for, I wouldn’t be able to part with it. The 2-colour brioche stitch looks very interesting, I’ve never tried a 2-colour version, mainly ’cause I knitted a whole jumper in one-colour brioche stitch and was bored rigid!

  • I love the My So Called Scarf. I’m going to have to make me (or someone else) one of those. You’re very organised to be starting Christmas presents already!

  • Just goes to show how much yarn varies. I had leftovers with the silk I used which looks quite similar. The scarf looks gorgeous, both texture and colour.

  • I love that scarf – I had forgotten that I have a scarf in that pattern, must dig it out. The OSW is a difficult one isn’t it – looks tempting, but would it really suit – in my case I think the answer has to be “no!”

  • I’ll have to check out the Spring Interweave Knits for the two-toned brioche. I’m curious about their instructions. I figured out how to knit two-toned brioche on my own two years ago just by looking at a friend’s sweater (possibly machine-made). I can do it both knitted flat and circular.

  • I got some of that Jo Sharp Silkroad Aran, I got pale blue and brown. The brown is now an earflap hat that I wore all weekend (inside and out, it’s just SO SOFT), the blue is still languishing in the stash.
